Christmas and New Year parties are done and dusted and it’s time to get back on track. Here are my top 10 ways to get back under control…
1. Getting your mind right is half the battle
If you are going to make health & fitness changes, you need to make sure your head is in the right place, if it’s not, you really aren’t ready to make changes. It’s as simple as that. You have to want to make a change. You need to make a choice.
Now is the time to ask yourself, are you ready to change? If not, why not?
2. Forget the diet
As soon as you say ‘Diet’, most people instantly think they are going to miss out on something. Or that the food is going to be boring, tasteless, to hard to prepare, or they will think they will be hungry, moody.
This goes back to point 1. It’s time to change your mindset! Don’t think of it as a Diet. Think of it as a healthy lifestyle change. You will be making changes that will help you make healthy choices for the rest of your life. Eating clean, nutritious, unprocessed, natural healthy foods will allow your body to get the vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs and will also get the body you are after.
Think of your healthy lifestyle change as 80/20. ‘Be Good’ 80/90% of the time. You are allowed ‘cheat’ meals/snacks, but don’t do it out of habit, or just to have it, listen to your body. If you ‘really’ feel like it, have it. Enjoy it.
3. Why haven’t you got back into healthy eating and exercise yet?
Are you stressed? Are you busy? Are you tired? Whatever the answer is, write it down and try and come up with solutions to fix them.
Will eating healthier and getting back into exercise make it easier – time out for you, more nutrients in your body, earlier nights etc?
4. It’ Goal Setting Time and make sure it’s SMART
* Be SPECIFIC – Lose XXcm from your body!
* Be MEASUREABLE – it might be your measurements, or running a certain distance, or running a certain pace.
* Be ACHIEVABLE – do you really believe you can achieve the goal? You need to!
* Be REALISTIC – think about what you want to achieve in your time frames, your lifestyle and your commitment level
* Be TIME BASED – Have goals for all times – 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months.
Make sure you write down how you will reward yourself when you achieve your goals. Eg – A pamper day, shopping spree, holiday etc
5. Is the food you are eating your main issue?
If so, it’s time for a cupboard/fridge clean out. Get rid of all the crap in your house, go shopping and fill your pantry/fridge with nutritious goodness. If the crap food isn’t there, it won’t tempt you!
6. Is lack of exercise your issue?
If so, it’s time to get off your butt NOW and go and do something – go for a walk, go up and down the stairs 10 times, go for a swim, just get moving! Get your workout clothes out ready, set your alarm and get up early tomorrow and get back on your exercise bandwagon. Tomorrow is a new day! Use it wisely.
7. Forget the guilt
What’s done is done. You can’t change the past, but you are in charge of your future. So get to it. Positive attitude, move on, believe in yourself and make healthier choices from now on!
8. How do you feel right now?
Remember how flat, annoyed, upset, guilty you are feeling now. It’s probably because you feel out of control and feel like a failure. You don’t want to feel like this again right? Well only YOU can change that….
9. What’s your plan?
What are your goals? How are you going to go about changing your thoughts/mind so that you don’t get back to where you are now? A good way to look at it is to write down some triggers – you get busy at work, you get stressed at work, friends coming to stay, busy time of year, kids have so much on, lots of parties etc – well YOU are the only person that can set your boundaries. YOU are your boss. If you let these things happen they will, if YOU let yourself slip back into unhealthy eating, no exercise etc, you can only blame yourself. Get your priorities right. Happy, healthy YOU, Happy healthy everything else.
10. Stop making excuses and just do it!
It’s time to Forget the Excuses. Think of solutions, rather than excuses. There is always a solution, you just have to want the results badly enough!
Yours in good health
